Open Letter to UK's Foreign Office

Dear Ministers,

Yesterday I sent this comment to the BBC’s ‘Have Your Say’ question of ‘ How Can A Truce Be Achieved In Gaza?’

“We’re not going to get anywhere without honest reporting. In your brief summary you said during the recent ceasefire that Israel had eased it’s blockade. That was a condition for truce but was never enacted. You also failed to mention that 49 Palestinians were killed during this period. The west has made out that Hamas is to blame for the breakdown but the truth is to the contrary. If George Bush had any morals he would rein-in Israel NOW!”

So Hamas massively curtailed the use of any rocket fire into Israel for almost five months, how does Israel respond? While the world’s media is focused on the American election, it suddenly declares that one of the many tunnels, that smuggle all manner of goods into Gaza besides weaponry, is going to be used to kidnap IDF troops, blows it up and kills 6 Palestinians in the process (didn’t offer any proof, rather like the UN school building of the 6th Jan). That, in my humble opinion, was the collapse of the last period of relative calm.

And this truce came not long after Israel had killed 34 Palestinian children during another massacre towards the end of February, early March 2008. Have a look at this: http://www.rememberthesechildren.org/remember2008.html Add 200 to the Palestinian tally after the recent/ongoing slaughter. I would love someone to try and explain to me, ‘who is the terrorist?’

It is in my humble opinion that the present day leadership in Israel have used this time between Bush and Obama to do a little electioneering of their own. I can’t for the life of me understand or see any reason as to why the carnage of this last fortnight had to happen. Indeed, it is most unnecessary, unjustifiable and I would rather be hearing some condemnation rather than this blurb about a ceasefire that Israel will never keep. In fact, I would rather join Venezuela and expel the Israeli Ambassador to the UK. At the very least, this PM Petition, signed by over 8,000 people deserves a fair response:

http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/Israel-Sanctions/ And you want to let this murderous regime into the EU? I would rather their UN membership was revoked!

I have travelled twice since Dec 28th, the round trip of 350 miles to London to protest recent Israeli behaviour. I will be travelling again this weekend and shall continue to do so until Israeli forces are out of Gaza all together, until at least some of the border crossings are opened permanently and are out of Israeli hands, until Palestinians can come and go and trade freely with the rest of the world – they did not and do not deserve the way they are being treated. And I speak as a non-Muslim Englishman who has been known to vote Labour.

Tonight, no doubt, Israel will be pointlessly bombing tunnels around Rafah and probably taking the death toll up a little, maximising on, if any, futile gains. Please do not bother replying to this if all you can talk about is rockets fired or Israeli security first - I’m sick of it. Remember this?

[As Balfour himself wrote in 1919], “For in Palestine we do not propose even to go through the form of consulting the wishes of the present inhabitants of the country...The four powers are committed to Zionism and Zionism, be it right or wrong, good or bad, is rooted in age-long tradition, in present needs, in future hopes, of far profounder import than the desire and prejudices of the 700,000 Arabs who now inhabit that ancient land,'" Edward Said, "The Question of Palestine."

Because until you do and someone in authority starts righting the wrongs of these last 90 years, I see no hope for peace.

Yours sincerely,
